We’re delighted to be backing our visionary founder, Business Director and Publisher Karen Taylor-Brown, who is in the running for a prestigious Telstra Business Women of the Year award.

Growing up on a farm in Armidale, Karen Taylor-Brown’s passion for media and science started as a teenager. The daughter of a university science academic and a kindergarten teacher, Karen began her media career with work experience at the local paper. Karen then moved to Sydney, studying and working in broadcasting and magazines until launching Refraction Media in 2013 after being made redundant.

Karen is co-founder, 50 per cent shareholder, business director and publisher of Refraction Media, a content publisher that undertakes end-to-end project management of publications and websites that excite people about science, technology, engineering and maths. In two years, Karen has created a multi-million dollar business with more than 60 clients.

“I aim to inspire audiences, from primary school to professional, with stories of science and innovation. I want to motivate the next generation to follow this rewarding path,” says Karen.

Refraction Media’s core products include career guides, member magazines and websites and educational resources. Karen has overseen the printing of 500,000 magazines. Karen is a finalist in the NSW Start Up category, and the award will be announced on October 27.

Refraction is also in the running for the Small Publisher of the Year award presented by Publish Australia this month. Thanks to a partnership with Google Australia, Refraction Media recently mailed out 175,000 copies of Careers With Code, a magazine that aims to inspire young people to consider computer science and digital technologies as their study or career choice.

“It’s been incredibly exciting to see Careers with Code reach every classroom in Australia this year,” says Editor and Production Manager Heather Curry. “Every student will have access to information on the careers of the future.”
