Refraction Media, Australia’s only STEM-focussed custom publishing company, is in the running for a prestigious Telstra Business Award. As finalists in the NSW Start-up category, the team will find out on Tuesday 21st July at a gala dinner if they have what it takes to win the NSW division and represent the state at the national level.

If science and technology are vital to Australia’s high-tech future, publishers Karen Taylor and Heather Catchpole are evangelists for the cause. Refraction Media is a multi-media, content producing company specialising in STEM – science, technology, engineering and maths.

With a dizzying two years of growth and expansion, Refraction has delivered over 300,000 high quality magazines, 10 curriculum-linked study guides, 5 inspiring classroom posters, 3 websites, an e-learning system that enables schools to virtually visit Australia’s nuclear research reactor and an interactive learning module that teaches first year students the foundations of engineering.

The Sydney-based business produces Careers With Code, a magazine and website aimed at showcasing to high school students the wide variety of careers based on computer science, and the website Science meets Business, showcasing science and technology at the nexus of industry. They produce the RiAus Ultimate Science and Engineering Guides and the Postgraduate Survival Guide. In 2014 Refraction Media was a finalist for two Publishers Australia Magazine Awards.

“Our vision is to inspire a smarter future. We want to tell stories that will inspire, impress and excite audiences with the marvel that is science and technology,” says Karen Taylor, Publisher.

Refraction Media employs 4 staff and works with over 50 contractors, ranging from writers, editors, designers, developers and animators.
