STEM media company Refraction Media has been selected as one of 5 top NSW businesses in the 2016 Telstra Business Awards.
Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills are critical to a prosperous and innovative future. Refraction Media, Australia’s only STEM specialist, multi-platform media company has carved out a novel business model to raise awareness of STEM, and in doing so, has impressed the judges of the Telstra Business Awards.
One of five finalists in the New Business category of the Telstra Business Awards, Refraction Media hopes to take out the NSW award next Friday 29th July at a dinner at Doltone House, Sydney. If they’re successful, they’ll have a shot at the national competition later in the year.
As a STEM-specialist media company, Refraction Media inspires and engages students, teachers, parents and professionals with exciting and dynamic content in the form of magazines, websites, education resources and career guides.
Its flagship title is Careers with Code, a high school career guide produced in partnership with Google and distributed in bulk, free-of-charge, to every Australian and New Zealand high school annually.
Making an impact internationally, Google US has appointed Refraction to produce a US edition of Careers with Code to connect, inspire and encourage groups that are currently underrepresented in tech, such as African Americans and Latinos, to consider a career in computer science.
“Visiting Silicon Valley and experiencing Googleplex first-hand was a highlight for us this year,” says Refraction co-founder and head of content, Heather Catchpole. “And the acknowledgment of Refraction Media as a truly world class outfit has created a springboard for our continued global growth.”
Refraction’s other products include the online innovation portal, ScienceMeetsBusiness.com, careers inspiration hub, CareerswithSTEM.com, graduate advice site PostgraduateFutures.com.au and a diverse exciting range of free educational resources such as NRMA’s safe driving guide available at RefractionMedia.com.au
“We believe we’re the living case study for the Government’s National Innovation & Science Agenda,” explains co-founder and publisher Karen Taylor-Brown. “We’ve created jobs, we champion Australian innovation, we’re encouraging young Australians in STEM and we’re a company founded by two entrepreneurial women!”
Founded in 2013, Refraction Media has worked with over 80 organisations, producing 50 products including 5 websites, 8 animations, 2 education apps and printed 750,000 magazines. Refraction Media won Small Publisher of the Year award at last year’s Publish Australia conference and were Finalists in the 2015 Telstra Business Awards.
